 Cover note  Sexually transmitted diseases were the major target of the wartime
public health campaigns during the 20th century. This week's cover illustration
comes from a US poster, dating from the second world war. The image conforms
to type: women are invariably represented as the cause of the problem, while
servicemen are warned to be on their guard against the evils they represent.
