(HDL, left) lipoproteins. Cholesterol (purple spheres) is carried as an ester inside
the particles, surrounded by a layer of phospholipids (yellow) and unesterifield
cholesterols. A transmembrane protein (purple and pink strands) organises the
particle and is recognised by target cells.
