I am an experienced orthopaedic surgeon with no formal recognised training or postgraduate qualifications and I'm in my early fifties. I still find short locums (mostly agency) as a specialist registrar, staff grade, or locum consultant, but I now need to settle down and stop my nomadic existence. Also, I have had about six months of unemployment in the past year owing to a shortage of locum positions. What is your advice for someone in my position? Have I still got a career in medicine in the current overspent NHS?
